The customer, Apple required a rework of some existing North Face packaging in order for it to comply with their in-store packaging guidelines. The existing glove packaging was a cardboard header card with integrated eurohook. The gloves hung from the header card using plastic snap-lock loops. For the gloves to be inline with all other third-party accessories sold in the store, the product had to be in a box. However the caveat was that the consumer must also be able to freely get the product out of the box and test it out in-store, if they wish. Simply putting the gloves in a standard box meant that there was a risk of heavily handled packaging being damaged and becoming unsaleable.
To fulfil the brief, I worked with a packaging factory in China to mock-up a white box sample that had a magnetic flap fastening – This meant that the box could be hung from a prong but easily opened and the gloves removed. The box was made from thick cardboard, sandwiched between silk paper to give strength, as well as being able to hide the magnetic fastenings. Once the white box sample was approved by the customer, I then reworked the existing artwork to remain within the North Face brand guidelines whilst complying with Apple standards.
